UFC 248: How we got here and what to expect

By Tawny Cox

Two title defenses are on the horizon as Israel Adesanya defends his Middleweight title against Yoel Romero this Saturday, March 7 at the T-mobile arena in Las Vegas, NV. Weili Zhang puts her belt up against the boogie woman, Joanna Jedrzejczyk for the Strawweight crown.

Adesanya (18-0) beat Robert Whittaker back in October 2019 to win the middleweight title in the second round with a left hook to the chin that dropped him, followed by a few ground-n-pound strikes. He defends his title for the first time against Yoel Romero (13-4) who is coming off a close decision loss to Paulo Costa. Romero is a fan favorite because of his explosive power and sculptured stature.

Weili Zhang (20-1), who will also defend her belt for the first time tomorrow, snatched it away from Jessica Andrade back in August 2019 in 42 seconds which earned her a performance of the night bonus. She faces up against the strawweight queen, “Joanna Champion” (16-3) as some call her, which will surely be one of the best fights of the night.

The main card is rounded out with Lightweight bout Beneil Dariush (17-4) v Drakkar Klose (11-1-1), Welterweights Neil Magny (21-7) v Li Jingliang (17-5), Welterweights Alex Oliveira (19-8) v Max Griffin (15-7).

The Prelims kick off at 5 p.m. EST with Gerald Meerschaert (29-12) v Deron Winn (6-1), Middleweights undefeated Rodolfo Vieira v Saparbek Safarov (9-2), Lightweights undefeated Mark Madsen v Austin Hubbard (11-3), and Bantamweights undefeated Suga Sean O’Malley v Jose Alberto Quinonez (8-3).
