UNLV MBB Secret Weapon
By Cabria Kirby
The Runnin’ Rebels started the rebuilding process under newly hired head coach T.J. Otzelberger. They started with a brand new motto “WIN AT EVERYTHING.” They might just be able to accomplish this with their secret weapon… David Jenkins Jr.
The Rebels have added a highly valuable player to the list! David Jenkins Jr. David Jenkins Jr. is a Tacoma, Washington native and started playing college basketball at South Dakota State University where Otzelberger served as his former head coach. When Jenkins found out that his head coach would be headed to the city full of bright lights and deep rooted basketball history he knew that he had to transfer.
During the transition period, the junior guard was one of the most noted in the portal and held offers from Kansas, Memphis, Notre Dame, SDSU, UNR and Texas Tech. David went on a few official visits including Gonzaga, Oregon and UNLV before he wanted to make his decision. After completing all three visits he was able to weigh all his options and announced via social media that UNLV would be his new home! Ranked one of the top ten in the NCAA transfer portal the Runnin’ Rebels were able to secure his commitment which was huge for the Rebels.
Loyalty was what immediately sold Jenkins to Las Vegas. After playing under T.J he was loyal to his coach and wanted to show that he remained loyal! “T.J. believed in me when nobody else did and I wanted to present that same opportunity back to him.”
Jenkins just completed his transfer season for the Rebels and he served as the adrenaline on the sideline bench and spent a lot of free time with Loyalty Circle Members at the games. When not in the game setting, Jenkins lived in the Mendenhall Center , the official practice facility for Men’s Basketball. Jenkins is the creator of “Scary Hours” which is a phrase the players use when they in the gym past 10pm.
With a tough end to the season, not making it as far as they would have liked in MWC play, Jenkins is spending every single moment he can in the gym so he ready when season rolls back around. He is ready to have immediate impact for the Rebels starting the 2020-2021 season. Jenkins knows he will hold a big role as a senior for the Rebels “I can be a vocal leader as far as I can also set examples for my teammates.” He is a proven scorer and averaged 19.7 points and shot about 45% from the 3 point line.
David makes history at South Dakota State for this amazing play!
I am sure we will be seeing a lot of this in Las Vegas.
David values himself as a student athlete and knows its not just about being a player. Everything matters when making a dream come true.
