Environmental Effects on Eating Organic

If you type, “Environmental Effects on Eating Organic” into your Google search, you will see many different opinions and views. Upon your search, you will also find out that every other article states different claims. After digging a bit deeper, it seems as if there is not one clear answer on if it is good or bad. There are many steps that need to happen to unfold what it takes to create organic produce. This involves factors such as the soil amount/ quality, animals that are surrounding the crops, ecosystem, farmers, transportation, etc. With the WRI claiming farming takes up about 25% of the GHG each year, is organic farming a step in the right direction towards combating climate change?

Claims Against Organic Farming

One main issue people who are against organic farming claim, is land use. More land is needed during organic farming to let the animals live in a larger area with less crowding. Land is one of the largest expenses that farmers have to keep up with. Organic farming also calls for less fertilizing, which is another reason for needing more room during growth. There are claims of organic foods not growing as fast or large vs their counterpart, conventional. This does not give farmers their quick turn around time desired. Farmers usually will understand that profits right off the bat may be lower than conventional to begin. 

Benefits of Organic Farming 

Even though the organic food may take more time to sprout into the desired product, the soil is also benefiting from the actions taken. Based on studies done by Dr.Rui, When you take away all of the harmful ingredients in conventional produce, the soil does not need to heal as heavily as it did before. 

Animal Life

Animals are some of the many factors that are included when it comes to farming. It is not only important when it comes to farming produce that involves animals, but also any other type of crop as well. Insects and animals continuously surround crops in their home area or that they come across. This is a source of not only our food, but theirs as well. The water runoff on organic soil is filled with less chemicals than the conventional produce, creating a healthier ecosystem. The water runoff will also seep into these insects homes and habitats filling it with either havoc or hydration.

Synthetic Fertilizers Used In Farming

Synthetic fertilizers that are included in conventional farming have long lasting negative effects that can hurt the crops. They kill beneficial microorganisms found in the soil and destroy the organisms that live there. This also sends toxins polluting any water in the soil or drainage that runs off. This affects the marine life and other animals that go to drink the water. Once this is in their system, it can cause different issues to occur in their bodies. This is not only bad for the animals, it gets stuck in the intestines of our body as well. It builds up to toxic nitrates in us sending it to the bloodstream.

Conclusion

Organic farming seems to be harmful and beneficial to the environment. With organic farming needing so much land to flourish, it causes concern of costs, upkeep, time, and staff. This is bad for our economy and creates a bad environment on many different levels. Conventional farming is known to have potential harm to the insects, animals, and soil that could, in conclusion, come up more harmful to the environment than beneficial.
